The most difficult category to fill-in is that of a Yahtzee. A Yahtzee occurs when a player rolls five of the same number. Just how unlikely is a Yahtzee? This is a problem that is much more complicated than finding probabilities for two or even three dice. The main reason is that there are many ways to obtain five matching dice during three rolls. Here are some tips to win Yahtzee: Aim for the 35 bonus by filling the upper section with at least 63 points near the beginning of the game. For this, concentrate on obtaining as many fives and sixes as possible. Balance scoring between the upper and lower sections to maximize your score. How to Win at Yahtzee The roll of the dice is all up to chance, but winning Yahtzee doesn't have to be. There is some strategy you can apply to the game. There are two main strategic angles: Get the highest number of points available and get enough points in the upper level to score a bonus.

I used a pencil, paper, calculator, and 5 dice. First, I used math to calculate the odds of rolling certain Yahtzee hands. Then I rolled 5 dice, 100 times, and recorded my results.

Conclusions/Discussion

To minimize the frequency of 'zero' points (incomplete Yahtzee hands)on your score card, this is my conclusion: First, try to get a Yahtzee. Next, go for a four-of-a-kind. Then (in descending order) try to get a large straight, a full house, a small stright, then a three-of-a-kind. You want to try to get the harder rolls first. You should always try for a roll that you're in a good position to achieve, but you should lean toward rolling a more improbable roll. The good thing about this strategy is that you can use the easier Yahtzee hands as a saftety net.
