When it comes to getting your golf bets in, you have two options. You can bet the old-fashioned way and go into a local sportsbook if you have one nearby and place your bets. Your second option is to take advantage of new technology and cash in on conveniences by betting with an online sportsbook. Our Expert Picks
One of the best ways to make money betting on golf is to look to the experts who regularly crush the sportsbooks. Typically, these experts and their information and picks are highly guarded and only accessible by knowing someone closely or paying big bucks for the information.
Things are different here at The Sports Geek. We’ve pulled back the doors and given you free and unfettered access to our team of experts and their picks. These aren’t just the “leftover” golf picks they made or the common-sense bets that everyone already knows. These picks are their bread and butter. These are the picks that they are actively making and will be sweating alongside you if you choose to follow their advice.
We recommend using these picks in two ways. First, you can take them straight to the bank. See a pick you like? Take that information and head to your nearest sportsbook or online site and place the same bet. If you’re someone who likes to make your own picks, that does not mean you can’t still listen to the experts.
Take a look at their picks and see if they line up with your thoughts. Read their thought process and see if it has any effect on your bets. Maybe they’re seeing something that you missed, or you didn’t think was important. More information is always a positive when it comes to sports betting.
Also, these picks are regularly updated in real-time so that you can get out in front of good lines and not miss any big opportunities.
The Most Popular Golf Bet Types
Sports betting online has its perks especially when it comes to the sport of golf. In your local brick and mortar sportsbook, you may have a few different types of bets available but nowhere near the choices you have when betting online. Online sportsbooks give you the ultimate in betting flexibility allowing you to push any and all predictions and edges you may find.
If this is news to you or you’re rusty on the different options available, we’ve got you covered. Below we’ve outlined the most popular types of golf bets available. Make sure you take a minute and read through each of these. There may be ways to bet that you’re unaware of that may give you options with a big effect on your bottom line profit. You can win money betting on golf and NOT be picking the winner of a particular tournament.
To Win Bets
This is the simplest of golf bets available and the most popular. However, just because it’s simple and popular among the masses does not mean it can’t be a solid part of a winning betting strategy. Professionals use this bet type day in and day out to pad their pockets with cash and so can you.
All that being said, let’s talk about what the bet actually is. A “to win” bet is a bet on who will win a particular golf tournament. If you think that Jason Day is going to win an upcoming tournament, you can place a “to win” bet on him for that particular event. If he wins the tournament, you win your bet. It does not get much simpler than that making this a great bet for those new to betting professional golf.
While this bet ultimately comes down to picking winners, there is one bit of advice we’d like to make sure you’re aware of. “To win” bets almost always payout way better than even money. Typically the “worst” odds or lowest payouts you will see on the favorite to win a golf tournament are 7 or 8 to 1. This means that a $10 bet will win you $70 or $80 on the favorite to win.
Sometimes these odds can be astronomical as well offering HUGE payouts. Check out this bet that one of our staff members made on Si Woo Kim to win the Wyndham. They bet $100 at 15,000 to 1 which paid out a cool $15,000 in profit.
The point of showing you that is not to show off. We want you to see that “to win” bets can be extremely lucrative and should never be discounted just because they are simple to understand. With odds like this, you can also bet several different golfers at once and still turn a profit as long as one of your golfers wins. You can regularly and easily bet 5-10 different golfers and still see a profit as long as one of them wins the tournament.
Versus the Field Bets
This golf bet is a fun one because it allows you to root for everyone else except for one or a few golfers. Typically, you’ll see this bet only for later rounds in a tournament when there is one golfer who looks to be running away with a tournament. The sportsbook will give you the option of betting that anyone else wins EXCEPT the denoted golfer. It does not matter who wins, just that the golfer designated does not win.
For example, let’s say Matt Kuchar is up five strokes going into the last day of a tournament. You might see a versus the field bet that allows you to wager that Kuch is going to lose. It doesn’t matter if Jason Day beats him or some random chump you’ve never heard of. All that matters is that he does not win and you win your bet.
Head to Head Golf Bets
Golf Betting Explained
We covered the strategy associated with this bet type in our strategy guide section above, but that may have come a little premature. You can’t utilize the strategy of a bet until you know what the bet entails and how it works.
This is the bet that you will see the biggest jump in options when you bet online versus in a brick and mortar setting or with a shady bookie in the back alley of the local pub. A head to head golf bet is one where the sportsbook sets a line between two golfers that is completely independent of the overall results of the tournament field.
For example, let’s say that Jason Dufner and Jason Day are both in round four of a tournament. The sportsbook will set a line on who will win for that particular round or for the remainder of the tournament. ALL THAT MATTERS is which of the two finishes better than the other. It does not matter if they get 40th and 45th in the tournament. You win your bet if the golfer you selected finishes higher or shoots better than the other golfer in the head to head matchup.
These bets are a FANTASTIC way to make money as they allow you to leverage knowledge or particular golfers that might not be in the running to win the tournament. Let’s say in our above example that both Dufner and Day stand no shot of winning the tournament, but you have a prediction that Day is going to shoot lights out perfect in the fourth round.
You can’t place a “to win” bet on Day because you don’t think he’s going to win. All you think is going to happen is that he’s going to play incredible and therefore most likely finish higher than Dufner. With a head to head bet, you can now make money on this prediction if you are right. These bets are the bread and butter of that betting flexibility we’ve been talking about.
Brick and mortar sportsbook will sometimes offer a few options for head to head matchups, especially during higher profile tournaments. It’s rare to see more than two or three, though. Online sportsbooks, on the other hand, will sometimes offer tons of different head to head matchups for you to choose from. The online sportsbooks will also offer these bets on way more tournaments and not just the big-ticket ones.
If you’re someone looking to expand your golf betting and take it to the next level, head to head matchups are the perfect spot for you to find favorable lines and make some serious cash.
Futures Bets
Sportsbooks love to come up with fancy names for simple bets. While this bet might sound like something out of Star Wars, it’s actually quite simple to understand and can be very lucrative. A futures bet is one that is not decided by one tournament but is a longer-term bet.
In professional golf, there is one popular futures bet that you can make. Sportsbooks will give you odds to bet on who will win the PGA Championship. This bet is popularly made at the beginning of the season or at the beginning of the playoffs, though, you can usually make it at any point during the season or playoffs.

The difference will be what payout odds you get. As someone becomes more likely to win, the payout odds on them will go down meaning you will earn less for a correct prediction. As someone becomes less likely to win, the payout odds will go up on them meaning you will earn more for a correct prediction. For example, let’s say at the beginning of the season you think that Jason Day is going to win the PGA Championship. You may get odds of something like 10 to 1 on this happening.
Let’s also say that as the season goes on, Day begins to crush winning everything under the sun. You’re not going to be able to get a 10 to 1 payout on a new bet. If you already placed the bet at 10 to 1, you’re in great shape as you’re locked into that. But the odds will probably move to something like 6 to 1 meaning that if he wins, any new bettors will get paid out a lot less.
Regardless of when you make your bet, the stipulations to win are the same. If you’re guy or gal wins the PGA Championship and is crowned Champ at the end of the year, you’re heading to the bank.
Prop Bets
Golf props are a great way to have fun and can also be a great way to make some good money. Golf props are the miscellaneous collection of bets that don’t usually have a direct effect on the outcome of the tournament. That’s a confusing definition for a simple bet. Let’s look at some examples that will make it much clearer.
- Will there be any hole in ones during the third round?
- Will there be over or under 9 birdies on hole 7?
- Will there be a playoff or not?
- How many majors will a player win this year?
- Will the winner of the tournament be over or under 35 years old?
These are all examples of prop bets. While a player getting a hole in one will help them towards winning the tournament, it is more of an indirect effect. Some of these bets take skill, and some of them are straight gambling.

Betting on whether or not there will be a hole in one during a round is gambling. Yes, you could look at historical records and golfers playing, but you’re effectively guessing. If you bet on how many majors a player will win, that requires skill. You have to know the golfer and be able to accurately predict how well they are going to do in the majors.
This is not black and white. Some “skill” prop bets require a little bit of skill, and some require a lot of skill. The more skill that is required, the more you should look into including it into your profitable strategy. We’re going to repeat ourselves here because sports bettors love to convince themselves that ALL sports bets are worth making. Make sure that if your end goal is to turn a profit that you stick with prop bets that require skill.

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California will carry on this week without amateurs and without Golfweek/Sagarin‘s No. 2 golfer Dustin Johnson. Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am odds, with tournament matchups, placings and other PGA Tour prop bet predictions.
The Pro-Am portion of the event was scrapped amid the COVID-19 pandemic; Johnson withdrew Monday following a win in Saudi Arabia. The tournament will be held on two courses – Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course – instead of the usual three and the cut will be made after 36 holes instead of 54 without amateurs attending.

Johnson was just one of several golfers to withdraw Monday. Their absence swings open the door for yet another long-shot winner at Pebble Beach.

Jordan Spieth vs. Francesco Molinari (+105)
This is the top bet of the week with plus-money on Molinari coming off back-to-back top-10 finishes at The American Express (T-8) and Farmers Insurance Open (T-10). Despite entering at just No. 92 in the Golfweek rankings, the 2018 Open Champion is still one of the best players in this suddenly depleted field.
Spieth stole headlines with a resurgent performance last week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but he’s still wildly erratic off-the-tee and hadn’t had a top-10 finish since the 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge prior to last week. Fade the public pick.

Kim, the American Express champion, missed the cut at the FIO and finished T-50 in Phoenix in his two follow-up starts. Streelman was the solo runner-up in this event last year with an average of 2.19 Strokes Gained: Approach per round. He tied for 22nd last week with another strong iron performance.

Top 5: Nick Taylor (+1200)
The 2020 champion of Pebble Beach tied for 11th at the Sony Open in Hawaii before a T-47 at The American Express and a missed cut in Phoenix back on the mainland. He had similar form early last year and entered this event at just 229th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Top 10: Akshay Bhatia (+2500)
Bhatia has just one top-10 finish in 11 career PGA Tour events, but he’s in a good spot for a breakthrough performance in this lackluster field. He’s strong on approach to the green and has a solid short game. Those are key stats this week at the shorter courses.
Top European: Francesco Molinari (+450)
We like Molinari in a tournament head-to-head against the overvalued Spieth and this is essentially a second head-to-head between Molinari and Paul Casey (+250). Casey has been playing great golf, but he comes off a three-event swing to open his 2021 calendar that has seen him go from California to Dubai to Saudi Arabia and now back to California.
Fade the travel schedule and take the rested Molinari.
